Pizzeria antique to fetch £1m

A rare baroque antique console is to be sold at Sotheby's for an estimated £1 million.

The piece was discovered in a York pizzeria by a Sotheby's epert who realised it was the missing half of a Roman baroque cabinet which is decorated with lapis lazuli and intricate Roman depictions.

Mario Tavella of Sothebys was sent a picture of the console by the restaurant owners after having it valued. By chance Sotheby's was storing the other half of the masterpiece.

The pizzareia rents space from the York Conservation Trust which had inherited a table from a Yorkshire landowner although it is yet to be worked out how the two pieces came to be seperated.

The manager was astonished at how valuable it was but said it always seemed right at home
