The Council′s priorities, as set out by Mayor Jules Pipe, are delivered by the different service areas in the Council. The Council is currently made up of the following directorates:

  • Neighbourhoods and Regeneration
  • Community Services
  • Children and Young People
  • Finance and Resources
  • Customer and Corporate Services
  • Chief Executive′s Directorate
  • Legal and Democratic Services

Since 1 April 2006 Housing Services have been delivered by Hackney Homes, the Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) set up to independently manage our landlord services. Housing Needs remains with the Council as part of the Neighbourhoods and Regeneration Directorate. Education is also delivered by an independent organisation, The Learning Trust, who work in partnership with the Council.

Neighbourhoods and Regeneration

The Neighbourhoods and Regeneration Directorate has a key role in making Hackney a better place. It leads on the safer, cleaner, greener agenda and the physical and economic regeneration of the borough to encourage successful, thriving neighbourhoods.

The Directorate has a number of major projects and tasks planned until 2010, including delivering the regeneration, affordable homes and enforcement strategies. Longer-term aspirations will regenerate Hackney′s estates and neighbourhoods and create a ladder of opportunity for all residents.

Community Services

The Community Services Directorate is central to the achievement of balanced, sustainable communities, enabling a good quality of life for all. Working with partners it provides services that contribute significantly to improved wellbeing and independence, making Hackney a place where people choose to live and work now and in the future. The services provided include the complete range of adult care services, culture, parks and leisure, libraries, museum and voluntary & community sector development.

Finance and Resources

The Finance & Resources Directorate is committed to building on its achievements to date by delivering high quality and sustained improvements in all areas of service delivery. The Directorate aims to help the Council to achieve financial health and stable finances. It has made significant improvements in Council Tax collection and recovery rates. One of its key functions is to deliver the budget. This Directorate has award-winning Revenues and Benefits services.

Children and Young People

The key strategic focus for children′s social care is set out in the in the Children′s Act 2004 which gave legal force to Every Child Matters, the government′s vision for children and young people′s services. The framework for this focuses on five key outcomes:

  • Be Healthy
  • Stay Safe
  • Enjoy and Achieve
  • Make a Positive Contribution
  • Achieve Economic Well Being

Customer and Corporate Services 

Customer Services, Human Resources, ICT and Property Services are based in this Directorate.

The directorate aims to provide high quality, value for money support services to enable the Council and our partners to put their customers first.

Chief Executive′s Department

This Directorate provides essential support functions including Policy and Performance, Communications and Consultation and Strategic Partnerships. 

Legal and Democratic Services

This area is responsible for the legal and civic duties across the authority. It includes Electoral Services, Legal Services and Services for Councillors.
